What are Jigsaw Mats?

Interlocking EVA foam jigsaw mats have become very popular over the few years and seem to be replacing the old style 2m x 1m straight edge mats that are very expensive. Jigsaw mats are much more affordable compared to the old style mats and can be used for many activities that include but not restricted to many gym activities, Aikido, Kempo, Ju Jitsu, Karate, Ninjutsu, Kung Fu, Yoga, Home exercises,  Taekwondo, Capoeira, Kick Boxing, Boxing etc…. You can get cheap versions of the mats but we recommend solid EVA Foam as they are very durable and do not absorb water. They are 1 metre squared in size and 20mm or 40mm deep.

20mm Jigsaw Mats

20mm jigsaw mats are of course cheapest option, but do not offer as much protection from throws as the thicker 40mm jigsaw mats. The 20mm jigsaw mats are recommended more for Karate and sports where there is not so much throwing as for example Judo. They also seem to be very popular for a replacement to the standard gym mats and striking martial arts.

40mm Jigsaw Mats

40mm Jigsaw Mats are more suited for falling martial arts including Judo, Jui Jitsu and Aikido as they offer more protection.  The 40mm jigsaw mats do seem to offer better value for money than the 20mm jigsaw mats as they are of course twice thick and offer more protection although are normally not twice the price.  For this reason they seem to be a more popular choice of jigsaw mats.

40mm Tatami Jigsaw Mats

Tatami jigsaw mats are softer than the standard jigsaw mats available and seem to be the main replacement for the old style 2m x 1m very heavy Judo mats.

Although the standard 40mm jigsaw mats are commonly used for Judo, the Tatami style is a better replacement as they are softer than the standard mats.

Of course these mats can also be used for many applications but as they are softer may be too soft, for example Karate as your feet can sink into them more making you unstable.

Reversible Jigsaw Mats

Some jigsaw mats come with one colour on one side and another on the other side, This is ideal for making varied colour patterns, borders, centre piece, competitors starting position e.t.c

Another advantage is that is you damage one side you can simply turn it over and use the other side.
